The Company was founded in 1977 under the name Pietrini Bros. and became Sider Piombino s.r.l. in 1990, with Mr Bruno Pietrini as sole Director.

Sider Piombino is now a S.p.A placed in Piombino (Livorno – ITALY), via Po n° 4 at Montegemoli (localidade).

Sider Piombino designs, builds and installs metallurgical machines, cranes and hoisting appliances, pressure vessels, disposable drums for radioactive waste, structural works in general, mechanical works, maintenance of machineries and industrial plants, hire of high capacity crane truks for hoisting and special handlines.

The Technical Department carries out studies and research related to projects, it is run by a designer engineer, by four draftsmen expert in technical drawings and in the use of CAD systems, two technicians and a first level mechanical engineer.

 

Sider Piombino has designed and builded numerouses special machines for metallurgical industry based on specifical customer techinical specification and has patented industrial systems and equipments for the nuclear, mechanical and agricultural sectors.

The lastest important realizations are:
- a gantry crane with double beams for the handling ad stocking of 108 meters length rails;
- Thick slab loading boom crane on commercial jetty – capacity 85tons x 17,5 meters –
  63tons x 24 meters
- Rotating raw material discharger on commercial jetty – capacity 45t x 1860 tons per hour;
- 28 cubical metres scissors and scraper grabs for raw materials discharge;
- Pressure vessels in accordance with 97/23/EC directive – PED (Pressure Equipment Directive)

Situated on 34000 sq.m of industrial land, Sider Piombino has 9.000 sq.m of covered space which is divided between the mechanical workshop and the carpentry areas, and 600 sq.m of offices. Also there is a Sandblasting and Painting Plant (6m x 40m – height 6m).

One 4000 sq.m shed made up of two 20 meters spans bays is equipped with 12t, 25t,40t. and 63 t bridge cranes and is used for the maifacture of large boilers and/or ladles for molten steel or pig iron. In the same shed, there are machineries that ranks equal with the best in Europe in terms of size and power, Sider Piombino is consequently in contact with italian and other primary European companies such as Ansaldo, Breda, Demag and Voest-Alpine.

Sider Piombino has a Quality System Certification in accordance with UNI EN ISO 9001 since 1997, released by "Bureau Veritas Quality International Italia", and has awarded the crediting by SINCERT, Italian crediting body. At present, the company has revised his Quality system in accordance with UNI EN ISO 9001: 2000.

Since 17/07/2003 Sider Piombino has obtained the “publics works execution qualification” (SOA) for the OS6, OS18 and OS31 classes, and respectively mechanical works, steel structural work and hoisting machines.

Further, since 2001 Sider Piombino has an Environmental System Certification in accordance with UNI EN ISO 14001 released by "Bureau Veritas Quality International Italia", with the crediting of SINCERT.

In accordance with UNI EN ISO 9000: 2000 and UNI EN ISO 14001 standards, Sider Piombino guarantees that the works are made with respect for the Quality and the Environment.

There is a Quality Control Department (GdQ) active in seeking to guarantee the accordance of the products with Quality standards. The department foreman is qualified at level 3 for non-desctructive control methods RX, UT, MT and PT run by a technician qualified in Non-Destructive Control using RX, UT, MT and PT methods. His three assistants are each qualified at level 2 in the UT, MT and PT methods. The Department has at his disposal all the necessaries equipments for the verification of the qualititive aspects of products, for the preliminary acceptance and for the testing during all phases of production. The training of personnel is also the responsibility of the Quality Assurance Office.

The Quality of the finished products is guaranteed by the presence of welders qualified in carbonmanganese steel and stainless steel welding in the methods of electrode welding, solid and cored wire welding and submerged arc welding.

Also the Company has qualified staff to carry out Non-Destructive testing in the ultrasonic, magnetic and dye-penetrant crack detection methods, while for x-raying is out-sourced to specialised companies.

Materials are purchased from Approved Suppliers who are constantly monitored far reliability through continual testing of supplies.

Thanks to active collaboration with specialised companies in other sector, Sider Piombino is able to supply complete plants with hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and automated parts managed by computer or PLC.

The training and qualification of personnel are important activities in fact Sider Piombino devotes a great deal of investment in financial terms and in time spent by tecnicians, in educational activities.

Also the personnel training is carried out beyond the specific needs of the Company, in fact Sider Piombino usually helps students and undergraduates for the treatment of graduation thesis and reports, and young people and students looking for first employment are taken in to do Stages, organized by institution such as The Association of Small Industries of Livorno, Confesercenti (Italian Trade Association) and the University of Pisa.
